Incidence of Breast Cancer
ONE IN EIGHT WOMEN GETS CANCER.
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women. While its incidence varies across societies, it is known that in Western societies, 1 in 8-10 women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. Only 1% of all breast cancers occur in men.
The incidence of breast cancer has increased significantly over the last 50-60 years. One reason for this is changes in certain conditions considered risk factors (for example, postponing childbearing until later in life). After the 1980s, screening examinations and mammograms for early detection of breast cancer made it possible to diagnose breast cancer at earlier stages.
Despite the increasing incidence of breast cancer, breast cancer-related death rates are gradually decreasing thanks to advances in diagnosis and treatment.
While 10-15% of all breast cancers are familial, 85-90% occur in women with no family history.
